GCP Associate Cloud Engineer Certification Guide

The Associate Cloud Engineer exam checks whether you can set up, run and secure things on Google Cloud. This guide gives the facts from Google's exam page and exam guide, including the four sections and their weights, says what the certificate does and does not show, and sets out a hands-on study plan.

The Associate Cloud Engineer certification is Google Cloud's general, hands-on credential. It does not ask whether you can design a platform. It asks whether you can be trusted with one: create the project, deploy the workload, find the log line, grant the right role and no more.

This guide sticks to what Google publishes about the exam, as read on 2 October 2026, and adds a way to prepare.

The exam at a glance

Length2 hours
Questions50 to 60, multiple choice and multiple select
FeeUSD 125, plus tax where applicable
LanguagesEnglish, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese
WhereOnline with a remote proctor, or at a testing centre
PrerequisitesNone
Recommended experienceSix months or more of hands-on work with Google Cloud
Valid for3 years

These come from Google's page for the exam (Google Cloud: Associate Cloud Engineer certification). Fees and formats change, so read that page before you book.

The page also carries a notice that the exam was updated to reflect recent branding changes. Google has renamed several products, and the exam uses the new names. Study from the current exam guide, not from a course recorded two years ago.

What it covers

The exam guide divides the content into four sections (Google Cloud: Associate Cloud Engineer exam guide):

SectionShare of the examWhat it means in practice
1. Setting up a cloud solution environmentAbout 20%Projects and the resource hierarchy, organisation policies, enabling APIs, quotas, billing accounts, budgets and billing exports
2. Planning and implementing a cloud solutionAbout 30%Choosing and deploying compute, storage, data and networking, and using infrastructure-as-code tools
3. Ensuring successful operationAbout 30%Managing running resources, backups and restores, monitoring, logging and alerts
4. Configuring access and securityAbout 20%IAM policies and roles, service accounts, impersonation and short-lived credentials

Three things stand out when you read the full list.

It is broad. Compute Engine, Kubernetes, Cloud Run, load balancers, VPC networks, Cloud Storage classes, several databases, Dataflow and Pub/Sub all appear. No one area is deep.

It is operational. Many items start with verbs such as creating, configuring, viewing, resizing and backing up. The exam rewards having done the task, not having read about it.

It now includes AI-assisted tooling. The current guide lists Gemini-based assistants for planning, monitoring and analysing resources, and deploying an agent to the platform formerly called Vertex AI. Older preparation material will not mention these.

For a data engineer, the useful overlap is large: IAM and service accounts, networking, Cloud Storage, monitoring and billing are the parts of the platform that data courses tend to skip. See GCP IAM, GCP networking basics and logging and monitoring on GCP.

What the certificate shows, and what it does not

A pass shows that, on one day, you answered enough questions about operating Google Cloud correctly. That has real value. It gives a recruiter a recognisable signal, and preparing for it forces you through parts of the platform you would otherwise avoid.

It does not show that you have run a production system, and employers know this. A certificate with nothing behind it tends to fall apart in the first technical interview. Treat the exam as a syllabus with a deadline, and build something while you study. See GCP data engineering projects for your portfolio.

A study plan

The recommended experience is six months of hands-on work. If you do not have it, the plan below substitutes deliberate practice. Eight weeks at a few hours a week is realistic for someone who already knows one cloud or works in IT. A complete beginner should allow longer.

WeeksFocusDo, not just read
1Projects, billing, IAMCreate a project, set a budget alert, grant a colleague one role on one resource
2 to 3ComputeLaunch a VM, build a managed instance group, deploy a container to Cloud Run and to a small Kubernetes cluster
4Storage and dataCreate buckets in different classes, set a lifecycle rule, load a file into BigQuery, start and back up a Cloud SQL instance
5NetworkingBuild a custom VPC with two subnets and firewall rules, and reach a private VM
6OperationsCreate an alert on a metric, write a log filter, route logs to a bucket
7SecurityCreate a service account, impersonate it, and remove a permission it does not need
8ReviewWork through Google's sample questions and reread the exam guide line by line

Three habits make the difference:

  • Use the command line as well as the console. Questions often show a gcloud command and ask what it does.
  • Delete what you create. It keeps the practice free or nearly so, and tearing down is part of operating. New accounts get USD 300 of credit for 90 days, and a Free Tier covers small usage afterwards (Google Cloud: free features and trial offer). See the GCP free tier.
  • Tick off the exam guide. For each line, ask whether you have done it. If not, do it once.

Be careful with collections of "real exam questions" sold online. Using leaked exam content breaks the exam terms, and the answers in such collections are often wrong.

On the day

The exam can be taken at home with a remote proctor. Google's help pages are specific about the conditions (Google Cloud: online proctored exams):

  • It is not open-book. The desk must be clear.
  • No breaks are allowed. Leaving the camera's view can cancel the session.
  • You need a government-issued photo ID, and the name must match your registration.
  • You can reschedule without a fee up to 24 hours before the start.

Multiple-select questions say how many answers to choose. Read each question for the constraint that decides it: least cost, least effort, least privilege. Two options are usually plausible, and one word in the question separates them.

If you do not pass

For Associate and Professional exams, Google allows four attempts in two years. You can retake after 14 days. After a second failure the wait is 60 days, and after a third it is 365 days. Each attempt is paid for (Google Cloud: retake policy).

Results are pass or fail, with no numerical score. A provisional result appears on screen when you submit, and Google confirms it within 7 to 10 days. If you did not pass, a report in the candidate portal breaks your result down by section (Google Cloud: certification FAQs).

The 14 days are useful. Spend them on the weakest section, in the console, not in the notes.

Keeping it

The certificate lasts three years. There are three ways to renew: pass the standard exam again, pass a shorter renewal exam of one hour and 20 questions for USD 75, or complete designated courses and skill badges in Google Skills. The last route extends validity by one year at a time.

Is it the right one?

If your goal is data work, this exam is a foundation, not the destination. It makes the Professional Data Engineer exam easier, because the platform questions stop being a distraction. See the Professional Data Engineer certification guide and which GCP certification to pick first.

How much does the Associate Cloud Engineer exam cost?

Google lists the registration fee as USD 125, plus tax where applicable, as read on 2 October 2026. The shorter renewal exam is USD 75.

Are there prerequisites for the Associate Cloud Engineer exam?

No. Google lists no prerequisites and recommends six months or more of hands-on experience with Google Cloud.

How long is the Associate Cloud Engineer certification valid?

Three years. It can be renewed by passing the standard exam, by passing a shorter renewal exam, or by completing designated courses and skill badges in Google Skills, which adds one year.

How many times can I retake a Google Cloud exam?

For Associate and Professional exams, four attempts in two years. The waits are 14 days after the first failed attempt, 60 days after the second and 365 days after the third, and each attempt requires payment.

Cloud platforms, Docker and CI/CD are part of the Data Engineering course.
