Power BI Certification (PL-300): How to Prepare

PL-300, Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst, is the exam behind the Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate certification (Microsoft Learn: certification). It covers the whole job of taking data from sources through to a secured, shared report. The best preparation starts from Microsoft's own study guide, which lists what is measured and how much each area weighs (Microsoft Learn: PL-300 study guide). This article summarises it as of the skills update dated April 20, 2026; check the guide before you book, because Microsoft updates the exam periodically.

What the exam measures

The profile behind the exam is a data analyst who works with business stakeholders on requirements, with engineers on getting the data, and who is proficient in Power Query and DAX. Every skill in the guide is phrased as a task, such as "implement role-playing dimensions" or "configure sync slicers", which is the best hint about how to prepare: by doing each task, not only reading about it.

A study plan weighted to the exam

Divide your time roughly in line with the weights, and adjust for your weak areas. Keep one practice model that you extend every week, so each new skill is applied to the same data and the pieces connect:

1. Weeks 1 and 2, prepare the data. Work through Power Query on messy data: data types, profiling, merges, appends, unpivoting, parameters, and when to use reference versus duplicate queries. Learn the trade-offs between storage modes; DirectQuery and composite models covers them.
2. Weeks 3 and 4, model the data. Build star schemas, relationships and date tables, then DAX: CALCULATE, time intelligence, semi-additive measures such as closing balances, and calculation groups. The DAX guide and calculation groups cover the core.
3. Week 5, visualise and analyse. Build reports that use every interactivity feature in the list at least once: bookmarks, custom tooltips, drillthrough with buttons, sync slicers, mobile layout, accessibility settings and personalisation.
4. Week 6, manage and secure, then review. Publish to a workspace, create an app, configure refresh, set up row-level security and test it, and apply endorsement and sensitivity labels where you have access. Newer topics that catch candidates out

The current skills list includes items that older courses and question banks may not cover:

• Copilot: creating a narrative visual, a new report page and suggested content with Copilot, and summarising a semantic model.
• Direct Lake alongside DirectQuery and Import when choosing a connection mode.
• Visual calculations written in DAX.
• DAX query view for finding poorly performing measures.
• Semi-additive measures and calculation groups in modelling.
• Personalised visuals, automatic page refresh and export settings in report configuration.

Study materials older than the latest skills update are the main risk. Check each resource's date against the change log at the bottom of the study guide.

Practice tools Microsoft provides

• A free practice assessment on Microsoft Learn, with questions in the exam's style.
• An exam sandbox to explore the exam interface before the real thing.
• Accommodations for assistive devices or extra time, requested in advance.

Hands-on practice matters more than question banks. Microsoft recommends training and hands-on experience before taking the exam, and the task-based skills list rewards people who have built models and reports themselves.

Exam logistics

• Passing score: 700 or greater.
• Language: the English version is updated first, and localised versions follow roughly eight weeks later. If the exam is not available in your preferred language, you can request an additional 30 minutes.
• Scheduling: through your Microsoft Learn profile, which also stores the certification once earned.

Keeping the certification

Associate certifications expire annually. Renewal is through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn rather than a new exam. Put the renewal date in your calendar the day you pass.

Is it worth it?

The certification shows an employer that you know the breadth of Power BI to a standard Microsoft defines. It does not show that you can deliver a useful report to a real audience. Pair it with a portfolio of two or three projects that demonstrate clean data preparation, a sound model and measures you have checked.
