Data Scientist vs AI Engineer in 2027: Which Role Fits You?
Data scientists turn data into answers and predictive models; AI engineers build products with foundation models, such as retrieval systems and agents. This comparison covers the daily work, skills, tools, interviews and career paths of both roles in 2027, how certifications reflect the shift, and how to choose.

The difference between a data scientist and an AI engineer in 2027 comes down to what each one produces. A data scientist produces answers and models from data: an experiment result, a forecast, a churn model, an explanation of why sales fell. An AI engineer produces software built on top of foundation models: a document assistant, a retrieval system, an agent that completes tasks. The two roles share Python, data handling and a habit of measuring quality, which is why people move between them. But the day-to-day work, the interviews and the career paths are different enough that it pays to choose deliberately.
How the industry now describes the two roles
Certifications are a useful signal of how employers think about roles, and they shifted in 2026. Microsoft retired its Azure Data Scientist Associate certification on 1 June 2026, according to its credential retirement list. Its new Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate describes the candidate as an Azure AI engineer who builds, manages and deploys agents and AI solutions, with experience developing apps in Python. AWS's Generative AI Developer Professional exam targets people with two or more years of building production applications on AWS and a year of hands-on generative AI work.
The pattern is clear: vendor credentials moved towards building and operating AI applications. That does not mean data science is disappearing. It means the building of AI products has become its own engineering role, separate from the analysis and modelling work at the heart of data science.
A day in each role
| Data scientist | AI engineer | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical question | Why did retention drop, and what will happen next quarter? | Can we build an assistant that answers support tickets from our documentation? |
| Main inputs | Tables, logs, experiment data | Documents, APIs, foundation models, tools |
| Main outputs | Analyses, experiments, predictive models, recommendations | Applications, APIs, retrieval pipelines, agents |
| How quality is judged | Statistical validity, model metrics, business impact | Task success rate, answer accuracy, latency, cost, safety |
| Who they work with | Product, business teams, analysts | Software engineers, product, platform and security teams |
| Typical week | Exploring data, modelling, validating, presenting | Building features, writing evaluations, debugging, deploying |
Skills side by side
| Skill area | Data scientist | AI engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Python | Strong, data-focused (pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn) | Strong, software-focused (APIs, async, testing, packaging) |
| Statistics | Deep: inference, experiments, causal thinking | Working knowledge, mainly for evaluation |
| Machine learning | Core: tabular models, validation, feature engineering | Useful background; less model training |
| Foundation models | Embeddings and LLM classification as tools | Core: prompting, retrieval, tool calling, agents, fine-tuning |
| Software engineering | Moderate | Core: APIs, testing, CI/CD, cloud deployment |
| Evaluation | Model metrics and experiment design | LLM evaluation sets, regression tests, guardrails |
| Communication | Explaining findings and uncertainty to decision-makers | Explaining system behaviour, limits and risks to product teams |
Tools you would use
Data scientist: pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, XGBoost or LightGBM, statsmodels, SHAP, SQL, Jupyter, MLflow and a BI tool for presenting results.
AI engineer: model APIs, embedding models, vector databases, LangChain and LangGraph or another agent framework, MCP, FastAPI, Docker, a cloud AI platform such as Bedrock, Microsoft Foundry or Google's agent platform, and tracing and evaluation tools.
What interviews test
Data scientist interviews typically include SQL and pandas exercises, statistics and probability questions, an A/B test or metric design case, machine learning concepts such as bias and variance or leakage, and a discussion of a past project's validation.
AI engineer interviews typically include a coding round, a system design question such as designing a retrieval or agent system with evaluation and cost limits, questions on prompt injection and guardrails, and a walkthrough of an LLM application you built, including how you measured it.
Demand in 2026
Naukri's JobSpeak index showed AI/ML postings up 31% year on year in August 2026, with growth heavily weighted towards experienced professionals. The index groups AI and ML roles together, so it cannot separate data scientists from AI engineers. What it shows is that the combined family is growing much faster than the market, and that experience counts.
Career paths and where they meet
- Data scientist path: junior data scientist, data scientist, senior data scientist, then lead or principal, or a move into analytics management or ML engineering.
- AI engineer path: junior AI or ML engineer, AI engineer, senior AI engineer, then staff engineer, AI platform lead or AI architect.
The paths meet in the middle. Senior data scientists increasingly build LLM features; senior AI engineers increasingly need statistics to evaluate systems properly. Many teams pair the two roles on the same project.
How the two roles work together on one project
Consider a bank building a loan support assistant. The data scientist defines what "correct" means: which customer questions matter most, how to sample real conversations for an evaluation set, and how to measure whether the assistant reduces repeat calls without increasing complaints. The data scientist may also build the risk model that the assistant's answers draw on. The AI engineer builds the assistant itself: retrieval over policy documents, tools that look up a customer's application status, guardrails against giving financial advice it should not give, and the service that runs it all. Each role makes the other's work measurable and usable, which is why teams that pair them tend to ship systems people trust.
Which role fits you
Lean towards data science if you:
- enjoy statistics and like asking "how sure are we?"
- prefer analysis and modelling to building and maintaining software
- want to influence business decisions directly
Lean towards AI engineering if you:
- enjoy building software and shipping features
- like working with APIs, systems and deployment
- want to build products that users interact with
If you are unsure, build one small project of each kind: an experiment analysis and a retrieval-based assistant. Notice which one you want to keep improving.
Switching between the two
From data science to AI engineering, add software engineering habits (testing, APIs, deployment) and LLM application skills (retrieval, agents, evaluation). From AI engineering to data science, add statistics, experiment design and classical machine learning on tabular data. Either switch takes three to six months of focused work alongside a job. Our comparison of generative AI and machine learning explains the technical difference underneath the two roles.
Learning either path at GloryTecks
For data science, the six-month Data Science course covers Python, statistics, machine learning, deep learning, NLP and SQL. For AI engineering, the five-month Generative AI course covers transformers, prompting, vector databases, RAG, frameworks, deployment and evaluation. Both run in classroom batches in Ameerpet and live online. For the engineering route in detail, read how to become a generative AI engineer.
